HYDRANGEA macrophylla

Pia bloom The dwarf hydrangea

'Pia' is a dwarf which is now widely available. When grown under ideal conditions, it reaches only about two and a half feet tall and wide.

Pia, like all macrophyllas, grows best in afternoon shade with plenty of moisture. This hydrangea is particularly partial to rich soil (high in organic matter).

Pia in the garden. The picture at the left was taken in a garden in Augusta, Georgia. The row of 'Pia' is effective, planted in the front of a bed with an evergreen background planted behind.

Pia is one of the few hydrangeas that stay pink under conditions that would turn most hydrangeas blue.
